Community Health Centers

Community Health Centers (CHCs) are enhancing their ability to provide primary care, mental health and dental services to the patients they serve during a disaster.  Milwaukee health centers serve vulnerable populations and are often the first and only place their patient population will go to receive care, besides their local hospital’s emergency room.

Health centers have already geared up by improving their communications redundancy, stockpiling PPE, developing emergency management plans and training their staff on the incident command system (ICS).  In the next 8 months, CHCs will be having emergency generators installed so that they can maintain essential patient treatment areas during a power outage or larger disaster.

Not a month goes by without a Health Center in Wisconsin having an emergency situation.  Sometimes the emergencies are as simple as a power outage, other times it's physical damage from flooding, but the health centers are preparing for much more.  A new area of focus for the health centers is integrating into plans of the hospitals and public health departments.
